She called the other evening and said Missoula Montana actually the whole planet suffered a great loss with the passing of Phil Wright. Much has been said and written about this modest and esteemed person. A memorial service at the Boone and Crockett Club last Sunday, attended by several hundred Missoulians, demonstrated a small measure of the-man. Now, another short story. I knew Phil best through association with the Montana Senior Olympics.
An avid outdoorsman and athlete, he had been a participant in cyclying and race walking several years before we were aware of the competition for seniors. As assistant director of MSO, when I eagerly accepted the opportunity to have the state games in Missoula. Phil promised his help, but also shook his head. He realized although I didn't the huge undertaking of a state-wide event. With the help of Phil and other enthusiastic commissioners like him in charge of each sport, the state games were a huge success.
Phil was in charge of cycling. Like everything else he was ever involved in, he wanted every detail to be taken care of. Months before the event he had the course laid out, the maps drawn, and had contacted officials. Since his health was failing he got Len Labiiff of Open Road to be commissioner and run the event. Phil came to all planning meetings before the games in June to participate, give his reports, advice and help.
9 He wasn't able to particpate, nor even watch, by the time the events opened. However, in the midst of everything, he called to find out how things were going and to give me encouragement. After the games were over and results were in, I phoned Phil to tell him of the success. I le was pleased and enthusiastic as always: "You didn't know what you were getting into," he said with a chuckle. "It will be easier next year." Phil, a winner of gold medals in the past for both race walking and cycling couldn't participate this year.

her daughter purchased the piano from a Johns family. Her daughter, Eloise Gay Findley, was in high school at the time. She didn't play the piano but even at a young age cherished 11 antiques, The caller didn't know if Johns were the ones who initially got the piano from the Spottswood estate. At the time of her daughter's purchase, the musical instrument was stored in a garage. She paid $200 for the concert piano.
An appraisal in later years put the value at more than $1,000. Mrs. Findley said that neither her daughter nor her grandchilden ever learned to play the instrument. Musical visitors have had the opportunity and she said it has a wonderful tone. Although the instrument is approaching a century in age, the burnished finish is almost flawless, except for a couple of marks on one end, said to be caused by clamps used when it was initially hoisted into the Spottswood mansion.
I was happy to learn the old piano found a good home. The keys may be silent now but at least the instrument is appreciated.
